In the early 1990s, I moved from Montana to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Driving through West Texas was dry, desolate, and hot and this was in February. I had never driven a road before with warning signs stating, “Next Service 234 miles”. Should anything have happened I knew I was hours from help! I saw many longhorn cattle on that drive and an old rusty sign I have never forgotten.

“Ate out by jackrabbits!

Flooded out by rains!

Burned out by drought!

Sold out by Sheriff!

I have frequently thought about this sign over the years. There are things we have choices about in life and some we don’t. Among other things, we can’t control nature or other people.

We can control ourselves – our thoughts, our feelings, and our behaviors. Our attitude comes from our thoughts and feelings and influences our behaviors.

Will I be here when the jackrabbits of my life have moved on? When the rain stops or when it comes again? Will I be here when the people who have “sold me out” have moved on?

Life has shown me repeatedly, things will work out, especially when I stay focused on my goals.

In the end, I want to know I am where I am because it was of conscious choices and not the result of sequential defaults. I want to be able to say, “STILL HERE”!!!
