How to treat elbow injuries

Elbow

What Are the Parts of the Elbow?

The elbow is a synovial hinge joint, enabling extension and flexion of the arm. The following vital components form it:

  • Bones: Humerus (upper arm), Radius, and Ulna (forearm).
  • Tendons: Connect muscles to bones, generating movement.
  • Ligaments: Provide stability to the joint.
  • Joint Capsule: Encapsulates the joint and contains synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint.
  • Bursa Sacs: Cushioning sacs that reduce friction between bones and soft tissues.

What Are Common Elbow Injuries?

  1. Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis):
    • Caused by overloading tendons on the outside of the elbow due to repetitive wrist and arm motions, such as gripping or lifting.
    • Often associated with sports like tennis or activities like computer work, plumbing, or painting.
  2. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis):
    • Caused by overuse of tendons on the inside of the elbow, leading to inflammation and pain.
  3. Elbow Bursitis:
    • Inflammation of the olecranon bursa is often caused by trauma, prolonged pressure, or infection.

Signs and Symptoms of Epicondylitis (Tennis or Golfer's Elbow)

  • Tennis Elbow: Pain on the outside of the elbow that may extend into the forearm and wrist. Pain worsens with gripping, lifting, or moving the wrist.
  • Golfer’s Elbow: Pain on the inside of the elbow with similar symptoms.
  • Common symptoms include decreased hand strength, muscle tension, and a “pins and needles” sensation. Diagnosis involves physical examination, focusing on wrist extension and elbow rotation tests.

Preventing and Treating Elbow Injuries

  • Prevention:
    • Warm-up routines and strengthening exercises.
    • Use ergonomic workspaces and proper sports techniques.
    • Avoid overexertion and take regular breaks.
    • Maintain a balanced diet for joint health.
  • Treatment:
    • Apply R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
    • Anti-inflammatory medications.
    • Physical therapy and prescribed rehabilitation plans.
    • For bursitis, antibiotics or fluid aspiration may be required in severe cases.
