What Are Adjustable Compression Wraps?

Adjustable compression wraps are made from inelastic materials, such as neoprene or low-stretch fabrics, to provide dynamic compression that fluctuates with activity. Unlike traditional elastic compression stockings, these wraps offer minimal stretch, allowing the person applying them to control the level of compression. The tighter the wrap, the greater the compression delivered.

Research shows that compression wraps improve venous return flow and edema reduction more effectively than elastic compression products. Their inelastic nature provides better resistance and containment of swelling, making them an effective option for patients with severe edema. Additionally, their adjustable design is often easier for patients and clinicians to apply.

When to Use Adjustable, Inelastic Compression Wraps

Adjustable compression wraps are commonly used for treating venous and lymphatic conditions, including:

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency
  • Varicose Veins
  • Venous Leg Ulcers

They are particularly helpful when:

  • Extreme edema control is required.
  • Patients have difficulty applying traditional compression stockings.
  • There is an active wound with a dressing that should not be disturbed.

Adjustable Compression with Inelastic Compression Wraps

One key advantage of inelastic compression wraps is their adjustability. Users can modify the compression level as needed, applying higher compression during the day when active and reducing it at night or during rest. These wraps also adapt to fluctuations in limb volume or circumference, ensuring consistent and effective compression delivery throughout treatment.

The Circaid® Story – Inspired by Nature

The invention of the circuit adjustable compression wrap began with Frank Shaw, whose wife, Hertha, struggled with compliance in her lymphedema treatment. During a visit to the San Diego Zoo, Shaw observed giraffes and wondered why their legs remained so slender despite their height and the force of gravity. He discovered that giraffes’ skin contains a high density of inelastic collagen fibers and a thick outer layer, which naturally promotes lymphatic and venous flow by maintaining permanent compression.

Inspired by this, Shaw created the first patented inelastic compression device, a circuit mimicking the properties of giraffe skin. Like its mascot, the circuit wrap improves lymphatic and venous flow through its inelastic material, providing effective and lasting compression.

Why Do Clinicians Choose Circaid® Products?

Clinicians value circuit products for their ability to deliver consistent compression dosage levels throughout the day and across a patient’s treatment plan, which often spans a lifetime. This reliability is achieved through excellent patient compliance, supported by the adjustable and user-friendly design of circuit wraps.
